Discectomy

September 7th, 2010 · 10:46 AM

I read your article about Alternative Therapies in Neurologic Disease on your site and wonder if Vital Primivia supplements you have on your site would be applicable to me.  I’ve had a discectomy, and I’m asking specifically about phosphatidylserine, and its dosage.

Here are some thoughts: A discectomy is a partial removal of the disc separating 2 vertebrae. Usually this disc is bulging and causing compression on the nerve in order for them to need to do surgery.

In my presentation entitled Alternative Therapies in Neurologic Disease, spinal cord or disc injuries are not covered. Although the supplements recommended for brain health (which is the focus of that presentation) would be beneficial, they will not help sciatica or nerve compression to a great extent. For low back pain, sciatica, disc injuries or surgeries, consider the following:

1. decompression, which means they put a slight pulling tension on the spine

2. energy work, acupuncture or Jin Shin Jyutsu or craniosacral, to open up energy pathways in the spine that will facilitate remodeling and healing. This may take months and years, which is why I teach someone to treat my patients at home on a regular basis.

3. Massage therapy, to relax the tight muscles that may be holding the spine out of position

4. chiropractic, especially if they do more than just ‘crack the back’

5. frequency generators, like the FSM machine, which has specific frequencies to help heal the disc, facets, spine, nerves

6. natural anti-inflammatories–MSM, DMSO, Boswelia, curcumin

7. if the nerve has been severed or severely injured, consider stem cell stimulation. There are substances that stimulate your own body to release more of its own stem cells for repair.

All these problems are very common especially the back pain. In which extant these therapies are helpful for such problems?
