I suffered from cold sores throughout my life. Stress and environmental factors would cause my mouth to blister painfully. After my divorce, the flare-ups became continuous. Dr. Gardner prescribed a simple nutritional solution. I have been completely cold-sore free since that time. This is what medicine should be. Thanks Dr. Gardner.

My doctor says I can get all the vitamins and minerals I need from my food. What is your opinion on this?
I used to say the same thing to my patients, back in the days before I studied healthy alternatives. It is the party line of allopathic medicine, although that is starting to change. Here's the bottom line, and I'll follow up with some info on what allopaths are now doing:© 2008 Stan Gardner, M.D. | Disclaimer | RSS Feed

I’ve been on lovoxyl for years and now am being told by a nutritionist that my thyroid is dying. I’m losing hair, have dry skin, brittle and ridged nails and am sensitive to the least change in temperature. I have extreme fatigue, also. I had been told in the past I was allergic to iodine since sea-food made me ill. What can I do, now that I am in my 60’s to change things and be healthier?

Linda, You are certainly describing the symptoms of low thyroid. To find out if the T4 (Levoxyl) thyroid hormone is enough for you, you need to get lab work, including a free T3, free T4 and TSH. If the T3 or T4 are in the lower 1/2 of the reference range, you are hypothyroid, and you just need to take more thyroid hormone. If the T4 is in the upper 1/2 and the T3 is in the lower 1/2 of the ranges, the inactive T4 hormone is not converting into the active T3 hormone, which is the most important. I use the crude thyroid extract like Armour Thyroid, Naturthroid, Westhroid instead of the synthesized forms. I also put women on iodine, about 12.5 mg per day. You could be muscle tested to see if you are sensitive to it before starting an oral form.
