Fosamax etc - Anything as an alternative that will work as well?
Fosamax and Actonel are used to treat osteoporosis. They interfere with the normal repair process of the bones, so the weak bone cannot repair itself. I would never recommend a medication that would interfere with the normal repair process of the body. Unfortunately, after few months on Fosamax, the Dexa-scan looks better because the repair is no longer going through the osteoclast stage which makes the Dexa-scan look worse. High doses of Strontium, in the 1,000 to 2,000 mg per day range, act as a stimulant for bone repair, making the Dexa-scan look better without interfering with the repair process. It is critical that all the other minerals needed to make the bone matrix are present-including calcium, magnesium, zinc, boron, silicon, strontium. DHEA and vitamins D and K are also important. Weight bearing exercise is also important for proper bone strength. Other vitamins also play a minor role in the overall health of bones.

My doctor says I can get all the vitamins and minerals I need from my food. What is your opinion on this?
I used to say the same thing to my patients, back in the days before I studied healthy alternatives. It is the party line of allopathic medicine, although that is starting to change. Here's the bottom line, and I'll follow up with some info on what allopaths are now doing:

What about once a month Boniva? Does it fit in this category?

My question is the same as the previous one about Boniva.

In my opinion, Boniva is not a safe drug. Stick with vitamin D3 and magnesium citrate. Get your D3 level up to at least 50-60ng/ml. It takes 10,000U a day for me to keep mine at 75, but just 5000U a day for my wife to get hers to 94, so get yours checked and suppliment with about 1000U to get the level up by 10ng/ml. In other words, if your at 40ng/ml, then take about 2000U a day. Have your level checked in 3 months. If your level is at 60, stay at 2000U. if its still low, up it and then recheck.
Again, I think Boniva is dangerous. Build bone the natural way. I’ve had my wife on d3 for a year and her dexa scan was totally normal… for a 20 year old! And she’s 50 this year…

Dr. Nicholas V. Perricone recommends taking Vitamin K2 to help rebuild bone. After a fall that caused my right knee bones to soften, with a bone scan showing the underside of my knee cap “collapsed,” I started taking Vit K2, and over the course of 2 years it seems to have genuinely helped. Although I have not had another bone scan, my knee does not “catch” as often as it did post fall/surgery.

I broke both wrists in May of 2011. I am a healthy, nutrition conscious 56 year old female, 5/4″ 123 lbs. My last dexa-scan was om August of 2011. It said I am .5 from osteopenia. My dr. recommends Fosomax. I am really hesitant, but don’t want to break any other bones. I take citracal 2x / day, have stopped drinking caffeine. I still run, tho don’t lift weights as often as I’d like to. What do you recommend?
