I have been off white sugar and desserts since last April, but still crave them terribly. What can I do to eliminate the cravings? The smell of chocolate, especially brownies, still is so hard to resist.
Usually the craving for sugars disappear in the first 2 weeks, although people with true addictions may take months to get over it. Another reason why the cravings persist is because they are reinforced with adding sweet taste to our diets on a regular basis. These sweet tastes may not be sugar, but may be sweeteners, or even fruit. The fructose in the fruit, especially if a lot is taken in, will trigger the cravings. Some people have to stay away from anything sweet for some time before it stays away. One taste of the sweet may bring it back again, so beware if you are one of those who is addicted to sweet tastes.
There is magnesium in chocolate, and some people with chocolate cravings need magnesium. When an adequate amount of magnesium is taken in supplements, the chocolate craving is reduced or goes away. Chocolate is healthy, but it is bitter. It is the sugar added that makes it a problem.
Some people are depleted of overall nutrients, vitamins and minerals, and when a potent multi supplement is added to the daily regimen, the cravings are reduced. Also, dehydration may mask as a sugar craving, so be sure to drink lots of water. Stress contributes to sugar cravings, and learning to deal with stress and reduce it may be important to help you get over your cravings.

My doctor says I can get all the vitamins and minerals I need from my food. What is your opinion on this?
I used to say the same thing to my patients, back in the days before I studied healthy alternatives. It is the party line of allopathic medicine, although that is starting to change. Here's the bottom line, and I'll follow up with some info on what allopaths are now doing:

I’ve heard that not enough protein in our diets can create sugar cravings. Just a thought.
