Folic Acid in Nutritional Supplements

December 14th, 2009 · 9:23 AM

Before ordering the free vitamins, is the folic acid in the multi synthetic? I just read that synthetic folic acid was cancer causing, especially for women.

Folic acid, or B9, is important for cell synthesis and repair to take place. Folate is an unstable form of folic acid found in foods—easily destroyed by prolonged cooking, and only lasts a few days or weeks before becoming inactive. There is extremely strong evidence that 800 µgrams (0.8 mg) prevent the birth defect called neural tube defects or spina bifida. This prevention needs to take place in the last half of the first month after conception, often before a woman knows she is pregnant. There is also consistent evidence that women with lower levels of folic acid in their bodies have an increased risk of breast cancer.

Recently, a study was released from Aberdeen, Scotland, which showed that women who took high dose folic acid (5 grams or 5000 µgrams) had an increased incidence of breast cancer. This is an isolated study that does not fit with the bulk of evidence on this vitamin, and it was given at doses 6 times those recommended for prevention of neural tube defects.

Vital Primivia, when taking 6 per day, provides 800 µgrams of laboratory-made folic acid each day. It is more potent than any prenatal vitamins I have seen, and I would recommend them for all adults.
