Nutritional Supplements, Borage Oil, and Liver Damage

December 11th, 2009 · 8:43 AM

A reader writes:  My husband has been taking your supplements and has felt so much better. I have not taken it yet as I am curious about the borage oil. Does it cause liver damage over time and is your free of PA’s or hexane free? I do not have a gallbladder and have venous insufficiency. Would the borage cause a problem? I think the way they come packaged is great.

Vital Primivia and the Primivia Borage are free of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA). This has been verified by an outside German laboratory. PA’s are found in the leaf of borage oil, and not in the seed from which these are extracted. The Primivia Supplement EFA line is also free of hexane. The liver damage risk is related to the amount of PA’s present in the borage oil. Borage oil ingestion will not be any more of a problem with digestion without a gallbladder than any of the other fats or oils.  Borage oil will have no effect on venous insufficiency.  Borage oil is effective for regulation of metabolism and the hormonal system, among numerous other remarkable health benefits.
