My husband has tinnitus. The specialist told him that he’s “at the end of medical knowledge and there’s nothing that can be done.” I don’t believe that, and we are searching for answers. I’ve read that magnesium, zinc, gingko biloba, and other minerals might help. What have you found to work? We eat healthy and he exercises, but is there some food that will help more than others?
Occasionally, tinnitus (a ringing in the ear or sensation of sound in the ears) gets better as you get healthy; that is, eat ‘real’ food and be on a good supplement regimen.
You do want to reduce any potential pro-inflammatory substances, like sugar, aspartame and Splenda, trans fatty acids, and caffeine. Rarely, neck problems contribute to tinnitus, and a massage therapist or chiropractor may help with that. Stress can also have a debilitating effect, resulting in a “ringing in the ears.”
The single most successful treatment that I have found is energy work. There are specific flows in Jin Shin Jyutsu and acupuncture that go to the ear, and often (not every time) there is improvement or relief after a few treatments.

My doctor says I can get all the vitamins and minerals I need from my food. What is your opinion on this?
I used to say the same thing to my patients, back in the days before I studied healthy alternatives. It is the party line of allopathic medicine, although that is starting to change. Here's the bottom line, and I'll follow up with some info on what allopaths are now doing:

Is there any over the counter medicine or vitamin to help with my ringing in my ear?

I recently damaged my ear at the gun range and have had ringing and a tin can sound. My doctor put me on steriods for 2 weeks to reduce inflamation to the inner ear and after a month I felt I was getting better. Then I was caught by suprise with a nearby lightning strike that sent my ear into extreme ringing. After another round of steriods and rest, the tin can sound and ringing is starting to subside. I am interested in knowing if Splenda can cause the tinnitis to worsen. I also have type 2 diabities, but have it under control with diet and exercise. I enjoy some products which have Splenda and give the sweet flavor without using real sugar. I am not using aspertaine products and also understand that ibupropen can cause increased tinnitis.
