Forbes Magazine reports the following:
Through the years, scientists have looked at beta-amyloid as the cause of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease. Billions of dollars have been spent researching drugs that will interfere with the production of this protein. Unfortunately, as the trials near completion, there does not seem to be an effect on the condition. Samuel Gandy from Mount Sinai Medical Center says, “People inside and outside the amyloid field are trying to think what are we doing wrong. Either we are treating the wrong thing or using the wrong drug or treating it in the wrong way.” A Scotland researcher has taken it a step further. Says Claude Wischik, “I think amyloid is a complete nothing. One day someone has to write a book about how a whole field can get suckered into this for so long.” Strong evidence points to a genetic component, the Apo E4, that markedly increases one’s risk for Alzheimer’s. Very little research is being done in this area. Some fear that if this present round of 41 drug trials do not prove fruitful, that all research will stop, calling it an untreatable disease.
Dr. Gardner’s comments: There are nutrients that improve nerve functioning, including most of the B vitamins and the essential fatty acids. This article focuses on the billions of dollars being spent on drug solutions, with no mention of simple measures like vitamins, minerals and fats.
Mercury is a known neurotoxin, and neurofibrillary tangles and beta-amyloid deposits have been shown to be by-products of mercury exposure when the nerves are developing. See the video at this link: How Mercury Causes Brain Neuron Degeneration. Because research on vitamins, fatty acids, phosphatidyl-choline (components of the nerve cell membrane) and toxic metals are outside the present purview of traditional allopathic medicine, very little is being done. The best prevention is still the removal of mercury exposure (especially from the teeth) and taking good nutrients for nerves. Genetic testing for the ApoE gene is common, and if you have the E4 gene, then much more aggressive preventive measures are called for.

My doctor says I can get all the vitamins and minerals I need from my food. What is your opinion on this?
I used to say the same thing to my patients, back in the days before I studied healthy alternatives. It is the party line of allopathic medicine, although that is starting to change. Here's the bottom line, and I'll follow up with some info on what allopaths are now doing:

Is it wise to have silver fillings removed as quickly as possible or should I have them removed over a longer period of time? My dentist recommends the silver fillings and tells me all the down sides to the white fillings, like… they cause more sensitivity, they shrink and leave cracks, and they have to be replaced more often. Which leads to another question I have; are there any lasting negative side effects to Novocain?
