Vaccines and HIV

September 29th, 2009 · 8:38 AM

The Wall Street Journal reports that a combination vaccine has been shown to reduce HIV infection by 31%, the first major breakthrough in AIDS management in years. This means, that of the 135 volunteers that contracted HIV, 74 did not receive the vaccine, and 51 did receive the vaccine. The vaccinated volunteers who contracted HIV had the same viral counts as the non-vaccinated group. There have been more than 100 separate vaccine trials since 1987, and none have shown any promise. The anti-retrovirals have changed the AIDS diagnosis into a long term manageable illness, instead of a death sentence. The Public Health officials are puzzled why two vaccines, which when given separately do no good for prevention, can be modestly effective when combined.

Dr. Gardner’s comments: AIDS is a severe immune deficiency syndrome. HIV is a virus like many other viruses-we are symptomatic when the immune system is down. This may be due to stress, bad eating, lack of the nutrients for the cells to properly function, toxins, or genetic susceptibility. Very few people with HIV actually develop AIDS. One can have a severe immune deficiency without having HIV. The protection to all of this is bringing the nutrients into our bodies so the cells can function properly. Healthy people do not get sick. All of us need supplements in our society, because of the poor nutritive value of even the best of food sources.
