Tamiflu, the Flu Virus, and What You Can Do

March 25th, 2009 · 11:06 AM

The Wall Street Journal reports, regarding influenza:  Tamiflu is an anti-viral drug that can shorten the duration of ‘flu’ symptoms. However, the most common subtype of the flu that penetrated the U.S. has mutated in some unknown way that has made it resistant to Tamiflu. In fact, 98% of the infections in the 2008-2009 winter season were resistant infections. Dr. Moscona, who is an adviser to several drug companies, says “We’ll never be able to use one drug very long against any of these viruses. They’ll be able to escape it.” CDC doctor Alicia Fry states: “The vaccine is still your best bet for prevention of flu.”

My comments: There seems to be a never-ending drive to shift responsibility for our personal ‘wellness’ (being flu-free) to the necessity for drugs and vaccine interventions. Folks, when we make healthy lifestyle and food choices, our bodies are capable of fighting off viruses, usually with no outside intervention.  I suppose this philosophy to “kill the enemy” may be important for the masses that choose not to live and eat healthfully, but for those of us who would rather strengthen our core immune system, it seems a rather frivolous pursuit–always seeking after the next quick fix for uncomfortable symptoms.  How much more effective it would be if we learned to understand what our body is trying to tell us.  Pasteur is famous for his germ theory that revolutionized medical care by placing blame on bacteria, and began the obsession with creating a germ free world.  Hence the “need” for hand sanitizers everywhere.  However, over the course of his lifetime, Pasteur realized that germs were only a small part of the picture.  As Pasteur said on his deathbed : “The terrain is everything.” He meant that germs do not triumph in a body where the terrain is healthy, meaning the immune system is strong. When we are healthy, the immune system will defend the body and we will not only be resistant to the flu exposure, but also to almost all other viruses and bacteria. When we get exposed to an infectious agent, our illness will not last as long or be as severe compared to the ‘unhealthy normal’ population. Likewise we do not need to be concerned about the side effects of drugs or vaccines, or the flu subtypes that the vaccine missed that year, or the new mutant forms that emerged this year–when we lead healthy lives.

My husband is experiencing extreme back pain - since 2/28
    with chiropractic adjustments.
An MRI showed a ruptured disc with a fragment floating. Yesterday he had a steroid injection in his spine which is supposed to reduce the swollen disk and dissolve the floating fragment. He is in a lot of pain. He is 70 and was referring basketball weekly when this started happening.

Very interesting! I have always felt that only part of what Pasteur taught was practiced! I totally agree with what you are saying I see it in my own family! We try really hard to eat healthy and take care of ourselves, we don’t get the flu very often at all and when we do it is very mild and short lived!

Martha, Ruptured discs cause swelling and impingement on the nerves as they leave the spinal canal. Hence, the pain. Steroid injections are anti-inflammatory, so reduce the swelling, thereby reducing the pain. However, if the underlying cause is not addressed, it will continue to return. In addition to chiropractic treatments, there needs to be muscle work done (although the chiropractor may be doing some of that). Massage therapy may help release the muscles that continue to pull the bones out of position. Energy work (Jin Shin Jyutsu, craniosacral, acupuncture) needs to be added to resolve the energy blockages so repair can take place. The refereeing probably exacerbated the injury. When the pain is better, exercises that strengthen the core muscles of the spine and abdomen will also maintain proper position. A well-qualified trainer may be able to design a stretching and strengthening program that gradually helps build the lower back.

I would love more information on vaccines and how they damage our bodies. It seems that every time a new strain of something comes along, drug companies run to design a new vaccine. Why isn’t there for information about the dangers of vaccines to our bodies?

Sandy, I am finishing an article on genetically-modified food and its frightening impact on us. After that, an article on vaccines will be forthcoming.
