Bug Crazy: Assessing the Benefits of Probiotics

More and more foods are appearing with probiotics. Probiotics are healthy bacteria that colonize the GI tract. Several subtypes are available, but typically fit into Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus. Saccharomyces boulardii yeast has been found to be most helpful in diarrhea conditions. Their usefulness in irritable bowel syndrome, oral health, immune health and faster digestion are reviewed.

This article reminded me of the importance of probiotics in our bodies. Any GI complaint can be treated with Probiotics. Any time we are on an antibiotic, our natural bacteria is diminished, so Probiotics can be taken between antibiotic dosing and for a few weeks after taking the antibiotic. The capsules, which contain live organisms, need to be taken in a timely fashion relative to manufacturing them, or kept refrigerated. Five to 10 billion is an appropriate amount to be taken on a daily basis. How refreshing to see the food industry place healthy items in our food supply. Just double check on the ingredients to make sure unnecessary “additives” are not included: false sugars and flavorings are not a good idea, ever.

I just found your website. I am dealing with lyme’s disease. I am interesting in hearing what you have to say about the treatment for lyme’s.
