In a great article in the Wall Street Journal, entitled “Eat Up Kids, This Spud’s For You,” we learn that children are being fed real food. I’m delighted. The cafeteria workers have reported 1/3 less plate waste, and the students are saying “I love this. Can we have this every day?” This is awesome! It is a standard for all school districts. Wouldn’t it be great if you could bring such innovation into the schools where your children are being fed?
In contrast, another article struck fear in my heart. In the same issue of the Journal, an editorial article entitled “Lettuce Rejoice,” talks about the FDA permitting food producers to irradiate fresh spinach and iceberg lettuce to kill e.coli and salmonella. While this may be seen as a safety maneuver, healthy food raised in a safe healthy manner need not be subjected to harmful irradiation that changes cellular structure and function. We have no idea what the long term effects of this practice will be on our bodies, but we do know that the “good” stuff that is alive and helps our bodies to stay alive, is killed along with the harmful organisms. I have to believe that our bodies need live food to live, and the more of our “fresh” fruits and vegetables that undergo this damaging procedure, the less good nutrition we can bring into our increasingly degenerating bodies. In my mind, this fits into the same category with genetically modified food and cloned animals–interestingly, they are unproven, controversial, and do not have the long term scientific studies needed to verify their safety.

My doctor says I can get all the vitamins and minerals I need from my food. What is your opinion on this?
I used to say the same thing to my patients, back in the days before I studied healthy alternatives. It is the party line of allopathic medicine, although that is starting to change. Here's the bottom line, and I'll follow up with some info on what allopaths are now doing:
