Healthy Example?

August 19th, 2008 · 3:26 PM

Looks like 8-gold-medal-winner Michael Phelps will be featured on the box of specially marked Frosted Flakes.

While I can understand the cover on Sports Illustrated with Phelps proudly displaying all eight gold medals on his chest, the question came to my mind: what exactly is this “winner” teaching our kids about healthy nutrition?  Folks, I’d really like your take on this.

I believe this “winner” is teaching our kids that he will do anything for money! I mean do you really think he got where he is by eating frosted flakes for breakfast every morning? My guess is his meals have much more nutrition then that in them. It would be interesting to see how most of those athletes eat and to talk with our kids about it, teaching them about marketing and true health at the same time!

First of all–I love that someone else picked up on the irony of the frosted flakes thing! Isn’t America great?! But I think that along with realizing that we are a consumer/money oriented society that its not really the athletes job to be my childs hero. I don’t think anyone told the 10 year old Michael Phelps that–in order to swim you must sign this “I will be a hero to all future children if I make it big” contract. Personally, I don’t think we can stop the machine but I can help my children to find heros that aren’t driven by that machine.

I had the same feelings and thoughts while watching the Olympics and the commercials….these bodies in TOP physical condition…a vision of how our bodies can function when treated properly…all mixed in with McDonald’s commercials….hmmmm….I had a talk with my kids about it actually.
